A popular science-fiction story, “In the Year 2889” needed a refreshed e-book presence. The story demanded a futuristic design with classic design elements, speaking both to the original release date of 1889 and the not-so-far-away year 2889. This e-book edition comes with a page layout specifically crafted for digital reading devices, with slightly enlarged fonts to reduce eyestrain and occasional graphics to support the story. On the cover, the silhouette of each number in 2889 holds an element of future software described in the story. Complementary colors blue and orange served as the baseline for the design, relying on classic principles to create bold and interesting designs. The back cover holds traditional elements from a print book, such as a brief summary and popular reviews. Designing a digital production that’s meant to be read for long periods allowed for a focus on ADA compliance and the consideration of those with visual impairments.
